Creative writing book supplement for Devin Siebold’s A Teacher in the Wild

Do you remember the moment you realized teachers were people and that they just didn’t live at school? This darling story recounts one such experience. I recommend it as a motivation for a writing workshop or for a writing center. A Teacher in the Wild shows the world through the eyes of the student, who is actually a little scared of meeting his teacher outside of school. It all works out, though, whew!

This post has creative writing prompts and rubrics download – book supplement for comedian Devin Siebold’s book: A Teacher in the Wild. The illustrator is Izzy B. In this story, a boy discovers his teacher does not live at school, and cannot imagine her going to the shopping mall. The book is available on his website and Amazon. A word search puzzle is included.

Students may apprentice themselves to Mr. Siebold’s writing style. They probably remember the days they thought teachers lived at school, too. The realization that teachers are people can come as a shock to children. A person I taught with had a student say hi to her in the store – one of his first words to her. Such a surprise it can be to see teachers grocery shopping, buying clothing, or even just dressed for the weekend and not the school day.

The prompts may be used as quick writes or for story writing. If used for writing an entire story, the rubrics will be helpful.

I have a feeling a few class clowns might enjoy this activity! That is a good reason to show the rubric before the writing session.

Why does my teacher need shoes?

If a teacher lives at school, only school shoes are needed, right?
