Desk Pets Indoor Recess Playground Idea Skip Counting Activity Free PDF
If you use desk pets as part of your classroom management program, you know students are to keep their pets on their own desks and not share them. It would be too much for teachers to referee if the pets moved around. So this idea uses different pets and not too many for teachers to place in a building center for indoor recess or a math center. Easily recognizable different pets would help maintain organization. I gathered supplies for this activity with many lids for building the playground over and over as they are not glued together, skip counting numbers, some desk pets, tongue depressors, and rubber bands. Children would create a see saw, perhaps, with tongue depressors and rubber bands. Climbing hills could be created with different sizes of lids. Water areas, recycling bins, and other playground features might also be included. The following images show what might be done. Of course, it would be cleaned up at the end of the time and rebuilt another day. Teacher discretion would allow for individual classroom rules. Perhaps additional community playground pets would be added when the entire class earns a behavior point, or reaches a goal as in PBIS.

Materials required for this activity are few, but quite a few clean lids will need to be donated to the classroom before use.
This part of the playground shows counting by two’s and seven’s. Students might croak out 2’s if the desk pets were frogs, and roar (not to loudly) seven’s if dinosaurs are provided.
