Inferring with Printable for A Photographic Fantasy Stranger in the Woods

This post is about inferring with A Photographic Fantasy: Stranger in the Woods, by Carl R. Sams II and Jean Stoick.

Carl R. Sams II and Jean Stoick have befriended, fed, and photographed forest animals and birds since 1982.  It has taken them many years of waiting in the forest to capture the wonderful pictures in their Photographic Fantasy books, videos, and audio recordings.  Their blog is full of very interesting nature information and photos. They have many other web pages and sites for their different books and projects.

The Stranger in the Woods is a perfect winter read aloud.  The stranger is approached slowly and carefully by the animals and birds, who realize it is really a snowman and a feeding station.  Corn is tucked around the feet of the snowman and birdseed is on top of his cap.  A deer eats the nose!  But not to worry, the children who made the snowman and arranged the feed are hiding behind some bushes.  They plan to keep feeding the animals until spring.  We don’t see the children until the very end of the story.

They way the book opens and slowly reveals the story through the eyes of the animals and birds makes it quite good for an inferring lesson.

  2. We have their Lost in the Woods book. It is absolutely gorgeous. I just heard of this one and I can’t wait to try it out with my boys. We are supposed to get snow this weekend!! (Probably just flurries) but this will be a great book for the coming months. Thanks for the link to the author’s website too!
