Whooo Knew? The Truth About Owls picture book by Annette Whipple is in a question-and-answer format. It answers kids’ most important questions about owls. Each page spread focuses on one question and answer. Do owls puke? Do owls sleep all day? How do owls hunt? In addition to the main text and lots of stunning photographs, each page spread includes an illustrated owl shares a bit more about owl life. I have reviewed several owl books previously, but this book is so comprehensive it also needed to be shared.
We have fun listening to the barred owls in the woods behind our house. Their call sounds like, “Who cooks for you?” We haven’t seen the owls, but we hear them. When we hear “who-oooo-oooo” we think it is a great gray. This book explains though owls have many sounds, and can even sound like dogs barking. First, recognizing the calls and knowing which owl makes which ones are important. Seeing the owls requires walking quietly in the woods and waiting. At night, take a flashlight, keeping it off until a soft whooshing sound is heard.
