Happy July 4th
So, because it is summer with Flag Day and the 4th of July, my game this month has a patriotic theme for matching number names. In the Everyday Math program, math boxes are used throughout the school year, and children have to fill the boxes with names for the number. If a box has a 6 at the top, the child may draw six cents, 6 tallies, 6 shorts (the word for ones if using base 10 blocks), or even math facts such as 2 + 4, 7 -1, and so on.

Young children can begin forming this concept before first grade to enhance their math skills later on. My game today has no “facts” but has other ways to name numbers as you can see in this photo:
Number names are important for children to know. We begin by explaining people have different names such as mom, mother, aunt, wife, teacher, and so on. Then, since this has a red, white, and blue theme — even eagles have different names!
And there are different names for our flag. The children should realize there are different names for each of them, as well (student, sibling, brother, boy, nephew, and so on).
They really already know names for numbers as in five, nickel, 2 + 3, and so on. Brainstorming number names is a nice math warm-up activity, especially when children realize things like 100 – 95 = 5, too.
